Why is product naming important?

According to a 2025 study on shopping behavior, 47% of consumers start their shopping journey on shopping platforms rather than on search engines or brand websites, and your product name is the first thing they see. This helps them decide whether to open the page or go elsewhere. Product names should also be optimized for search algorithms to stand out from the competition. This will not only attract clicks, but also directly affect your revenue. A well-thought-out name will help increase brand awareness and revenue. It will also help your products be quickly found. However, the problem is that every platform has its own rules and requirements regarding this issue.

How do you title a product so that it sells on all marketplaces?

Here are some tips:

1. Provide the right information A good product title should be clear, informative, and keyword-rich. Therefore, it would be a good idea to create a consistent structure for your brand and apply the same approach to all the products you sell. For example:

  • Brand + Product Name + Key Features (Size, Color, Material, Quantity, etc.)

2. Use keywords wisely Most consumers don’t browse categories – they use search engines. This means that the product title should contain the keywords that the user is using when searching. The most important words should be at the beginning, as many shopping platforms discourage long titles, especially on mobile devices.

It is also important to use common search terms. Instead of technical or professional language, choose words that people use in natural speech. For example, instead of “sports shoes,” it is better to use “running boots” – this will simplify the search process.

At the same time, it is important to avoid loading the text with keywords, as such a format resembles spam, makes it difficult to read, and becomes less attractive to potential users.

3. Follow the rules and requirements of the marketplace All platforms have specific rules and requirements for product titles. This is also specifically reflected in the character limit. For example:

  • Amazon: up to 200 characters

  • eBay: up to 80 characters

  • Walmart: 50–75 characters are recommended

Taking these nuances into account will help you create a more correct structure and optimize automation. This, in turn, will have a positive effect on both the brand image and the number of sales.

4. Add key product features Buyers quickly make a decision after seeing the product title and details. Therefore, be sure to provide the following data:

  • Size

  • Color

  • Material

  • Packaging volume and quantity

These details will make your information more attractive and bring it to the forefront when displaying relevant search results.

5. Try to make the text easy to read  It is recommended not to use bold letters in the title, as it can look spammy and also very unprofessional. It is also unacceptable to use specific characters, such as @#&%!?! – this does not add any value to the title, on the contrary, it can overload it and make it less attractive.

Do not overdo it with promotional texts such as “Best,” “Amazing,” “Cheapest,” or “Free Shipping.” These terms have no impact on search results and can be overwhelming or confusing. Instead, aim for simple, clear language that accurately describes the product and helps users find what they’re looking for.

6. Optimize for mobile  70% of purchases on e-commerce platforms are made from a mobile device. This means that long titles will be cut short. So when optimizing your text for mobile, keep the following in mind:

  • Put the most important details first

  • For better visibility on mobile devices, try to use only 50–80 characters

  • Check how your title appears in search results on different devices

7. Constantly test and improve your text format  Even small changes can have a big impact on sales. Try A/B testing different title formats:

  • Test whether removing or adding different details affects clicks

  • Check how your competitors structure their product titles

  • Make adjustments based on what works

Conclusion

A good, compelling product title can help you stand out from your competitors, rank higher in search engines, and ultimately sell more. Even small changes like adjusting keyword placement or product data can make a big difference. This refinement can have a significant impact on views and conversions.

If you create the right structure, optimizing it will not only increase your sales, but also reduce the costs necessary to advertise and develop your product in the marketplace. Keep in mind the tips above, focus more on mobile users, and always check the results to maximize your revenue.
